Should development proceed in a groundwater Source Protection Zone?

Hydrogeological assessment

H Fraser Consulting Ltd has just completed a hydrogeological assessment for a masterplan development area in North Yorkshire.

Groundwater boreholes within the area abstract water from the Corallian Limestone, for public water supply.

The masterplan area is within Zone 1 of the Source Protection Area for these boreholes, which is a highly sensitive setting.

Hydrogeological assessment

Examination of the geological setting and the SPZ report revealed that the aquifer is protected by many metres of overlying clay, and the proposed development is unlikely to present a risk to the groundwater abstractions.

Some precautions will be required to ensure that the protective clay layer is not breached, but development should be able to proceed.
