Farmers’ Expertise Crucial for Water Management in the Upper Severn Valley

Lisa Davies

The H Fraser Consulting team are excited to be involved in the Marches Future Farming Project (MFFP), a new initiative in the Upper Severn Valley supporting farmers to address flooding, drought, groundwater recharge, and soil degradation through practical nature-based water management solutions.

Managed by Shropshire Council, MFFP is part of the wider Severn Valley Water Management Scheme (SVWMS) and is led by the University of Chester in partnership with ourselves alongside Faulkner and Mayne Sustainable Agriculture, the Maesmawr Farmers Group, and Aqualate Consulting.

The project brings together specialist hydrogeology consultancy expertise to understand how water moves through soils, peat, and groundwater systems at farm and catchment scales. Over the next two years, MFFP will undertake farmer-led trials with applied consultancy hydrogeology to deliver practical, evidence-based solutions that strengthen resilient farming businesses and landscapes.
